Housed in a building that dates back to 1832, this former J.C. Penny’s store is now home to Gilbert, Whitney & Co. Once a mercantile store for those heading west, we decided to go with the original store name and it's role on the Square.

Independence Square is bordered by Lexington Avenue, Main, Maple, and Liberty Streets.
To get to the Square:
From downtown Kansas City near the Sprint Center - Head east on Truman Road (Highway 12) to Main and Lexington.
From West – From downtown Kansas City via highway, take I-35 Highway to US 24-East Highway (East Winner Road). Follow road past 435 Highway and Sterling Avenue and proceed to Main and Lexington.
From North – Take 435-South Highway to US 24-East (East Winner Road). Follow road
past Sterling Avenue and proceed to Main and Lexington.
From South – Take I-70 Highway to Sterling Avenue northbound. Turn right on US 24-East Highway
(Truman Road East). Proceed to Main and Lexington. Or, from I-70 East and 291 Highways,
take 291-North to 12-West Highway (Truman Road West). Proceed to Main and Lexington.
From East – Take 24-West Highway or 12-West Highway (Truman Road West) to Main and Lexington.
